I have posted soooo many burger recipes at this point, that, well, I’m not going to bore you with a long diatribe about this one. I’ll keep it short and sweet.
Basically, this is a burger inspired by French onion soup. It is loaded with onions… caramelized onions, onion rings, and French’s crispy fried onions. The cheese sauce is made with Gruyere and sherry cooking wine, which is a perfect blending of flavors.
This is absolutely not a good idea for a diet… fortunately, I worked out and was able to just barely squeeze this in to my plan! And, I am a total believer in cheat days. I swear my body responds so positively to the occasional cheat day. I think mentally letting myself off the hook just a little reduces the pressure and stress and ends up helping with my weight-loss journey. I do not, by any means, think I can blow my calories out of the water and lose weight! Just give myself a bit of a break here and there.
But, you don’t want to hear about my weight-loss journey! And there’s honestly not much else to say about this burger. If you are looking to spoil yourself just a bit, this burger is totally worth it! Super easy to make and loaded in flavor!
See? Short and sweet 😜
Enjoy!

Ingredients
1½ lbs 90% ground beef
1 TB Dijon mustard
1 TB Worcestershire sauce
1 TB A-1 steak sauce
3 sweet onions, cut in half and sliced
1 to 2 TBs olive oil
12 onion rings
French’s crispy fried onions
8 oz gruyere cheese, grated
1 cup milk (I use unsweetened cashew milk)
2 TBs butter
2 TBs flour
¼ cup sherry cooking wine
salt & pepper
4 brioche buns
Instructions
In a medium bowl, mix together the ground beef, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and A-1 steak sauce. Form into 4 patties and set aside.
Heat the olive oil over medium heat in a large saucepan. Add the onions and lightly season with salt. Cook, stirring often, until browned and caramelized ~ about 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, cook the onion rings according to the package.
When there is about 10 minutes left on the caramelizing onions, heat a cast iron pan over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for 5 minutes. Flip and cover for 3 minutes. Remove the lid and finish cooking for 2 minutes for medium doneness.
While the patties cook, make the cheese sauce. Melt the butter in a pot over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk together until thoroughly saturated. Let cook for 1 minute, whisk occasionally. Slowly add in the milk, whisking constantly. Add the sherry cooking wine and gruyere cheese and whisk slowly until melted. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
Place the burger patties on the brioche buns, top with the caramelized onions, onion rings, crispy onions, and gruyere cheese. Serve immediately. Enjoy!
